July 126 2017 (26 days)
At dawn, the tidal current is clearly visible. As the tide comes in from the sea, the water is forced through the narrow opening between the sea and the Skjerstadfjord. The passage is just about a hundred meters wide. The strong current causes whirlpools in the water. Numerous fishermen stand along the shore, fishing. The fish swim with the current into the fjord. Yesterday, men at the campsite had already caught specimens measuring 70 to 80 centimeters. After breakfast, we fold down the roof tent and pack up the car. We drive off the campsite and cross the bridge over the Saltstraumen. Today, we continue southwards. About halfway along the route, we cross the Arctic Circle again. In Norway, attention is also given to this. Exactly on the imaginary line, there is a visitor center with a large souvenir shop. Around two o’clock, we arrive at our next hotel. The hotel is about fifteen kilometers before Mosjøen. In the town itself, there was no suitable accommodation available. The room is not yet ready when we try to check in. Quickly, priority is given to our room during cleaning. Fifteen minutes later, we have the key. We decide to take it easy for a while. The past few days have been quite intensive. Only towards the end of the afternoon do we drive to Mosjøen.
We park near Sargata, the old center of the town. Here, wooden houses and warehouses stand together. Although the wooden buildings look beautiful, everything is deserted. Most shops and galleries are already closed. There is no atmosphere. Along the fjord, there is little sign of life as well. In the shopping street, there is a cozy restaurant. Although it is still a bit early, we decide to eat here. After the meal, we are offered a coffee on the house. Back at the hotel, we review the travel route for the coming days along the fjords. When we look up the accommodation for tomorrow, we realize that we made a mistake. We did not book in Trondheim, but in Tromsø. Silly! We quickly book an alternative in Trondheim and hope we can still cancel the apartment in Tromsø.
