Belgium - Weekend Hasselt

Weekend Hasselt

10-12 April 2026 (3 days)

A weekend trip to the Belgian city of Hasselt. Hasselt is a surprisingly versatile city that is often underestimated, but that is exactly what makes it such a pleasant place to visit. Its compact city center makes it ideal to explore on foot: cozy squares, boutiques, and terraces are all within easy walking distance of one another. It’s a pleasure to try Belgian beers at one of the many terraces in the center. On the way back, we visit Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau. This village is a Belgian enclave surrounded by the Netherlands. As you walk through the streets, you frequently cross the border.

The Historic Battle Around Ypres

17 - 19 december 2021 (3 days)

The route along the city walls leads us to the Menin Gate. Even in daylight, the monument is impressive. Wreaths lie on the steps for the fallen soldiers. It is a bit strange that traffic still drives under this gate. Two lions guard the gate. These are replicas. The original lions were donated to Australia. Not only soldiers from the United Kingdom fought here but also fighters from Commonwealth countries. Because of this, many casualties come from Australia, New Zealand, India, and Canada. The Flanders Fields Museum is located in the Cloth Hall. Through an audio tour, we are taken through the intense battle that raged around Ypres.

City Trip Lige

6 -7 november 2021 (2 days)

Just behind the square lies the Montage de Beuren. A wide staircase with 374 steps to the citadel. We climb the steep stairs. Houses stand on the slope on both sides. The residents have to climb the stairs to their homes every day. From the top, we have a beautiful panoramic view over Liège. It is clearly visible how the Meuse divides the city in two. In the park behind us lies the Coteaux de la Citadelle. Along the walls of the citadel and via the war monument, we come to a viewing platform. Here we look at the more eastern part of the city. Below us lies the Saint-Barthélemy church. This church, from the eleventh century, is the oldest religious building in the city.

The church was built as Saint John’s Church in the twelfth century. In 1539, it received its current name. At that time, the 89-meter-high west tower was also added to the cathedral. On the Korenmarkt, the square in front of the cathedral, we order a real Belgian beer on a terrace. At the end of the afternoon, we walk past the Gravensteen castle. We will visit this impressive fortress tomorrow. Around the Vrijdagmarkt square are cozy terraces. This square is one of the oldest squares in Ghent. The square has always played an important role in history. In the middle of the square stands a statue of Jacob van Artevelde, a folk hero from the 14th century.

Belgium - Historic Brussels

Historic Brussels

2 - 5 juli 2020 (4 days)

Our museum ticket includes a combination entry to the Manneken Pis Wardrobe Museum. As our final stop for today, we walk to this museum located near the famous statue. There’s some confusion at the entrance, as we do have a reservation for the Brussels Museum but not officially for this one. We hadn’t realized in advance that the museums were at separate locations. Another staff member is called in, there’s some hesitation, but eventually, we’re allowed in. In the small space, about a hundred outfits of Manneken Pis are displayed, representing different countries and professions. There’s even a special committee that decides what the Brussels statue will wear.

On one side stands the Belfry tower, which we plan to climb tomorrow. For now, we sit down at a terrace to enjoy a delicious Belgian beer. I opt for a Kasteelbier.
