As we drive further, we pass small villages. The island actually has only one road circling it. Life revolves around this road. The island has about 50,000 inhabitants, of which 16,000 live in the capital. Our last stop is a bay—a viewpoint over the narrower southern tip of the island. To the left lies the Atlantic Ocean, to the right the Caribbean Sea. In the distance lies the island of Nevis. Both islands are only three kilometers apart. Around one o’clock, we are back at the boat. Tonie visibly feels bad that we couldn’t visit the fort. He offers to drive us there anyway. This is not necessary. We still want to visit the capital. We thank him and say goodbye.
