Tour of Romania

Various stone staircases lead up to the citadel of Sighisoara. We climb to the top. The main eye-catcher of the town is the Clock Tower. The tower was built in the 14th century as a gate tower and served as the main gate of the citadel and as the town hall until 1575. The clock was added in the 18th century. Of the fourteen towers that once formed part of the city wall, only four remain intact today. Behind the Clock Tower lies the Piata Cetatii square. The square features several terraces and restaurants. The houses within the citadel are all painted in pastel colours. The streets look picturesque.

A Road Trip Through Europe

At three o’clock, we’ve reserved a guided tour of the Parliament building. As the building is enormous and we’re unsure where to enter, we allow extra time. A taxi driver on the square points us to the right entrance. Soon, we enter the Palatul Parlamentului. Arina welcomes us for the tour. The building was designed by a 21-year-old woman. Over 700 architects worked on it. Construction took place around the clock in shifts. Arina shows us the grand halls, various conference rooms, and the massive ballroom. This hall, over 1,000 square meters, is 19 meters tall. Everything in this building is oversized. It's almost unreal that something like this was built so recently. Via the grand staircases, we reach the balcony. From here, the boulevard is clearly visible—longer even than the Champs-Élysées in Paris. It’s unimaginable how many homes were demolished to make this enormous project possible.
