Dominica - Cruise 2025 Caribbean

Cruise 2025 Caribbean

21 januari - 7 februari 2025 (18 days)

After the botanical garden, we leave the capital and drive into the mountains. Dominica is one of the most mountainous Caribbean islands. Via hairpin bends, we quickly gain altitude. We enter the rainforest. Most of the island is covered in rainforest. The nature is carefully preserved. The dark sky turns into rain. A heavy shower passes over. Zaya explains that clouds are pushed upward over the ocean, causing precipitation. It often rains, but briefly. We drive to the Emerald Pool, a waterfall practically in the middle of the island. When we arrive, the worst rain has passed. I didn’t bring any rain protection. Just in case, I leave my backpack in the bus. A path through the jungle leads to the waterfall. The water cascades into a natural pool.

Dominica - A Caribbean Cruise

A Caribbean Cruise

29 februari 2024 - 16 maart 2024 (17 days)

In the afternoon, we walk into the town. The town consists of colorful houses, colonial buildings, and dilapidated houses damaged by the hurricane. In one of the ruins is the Ruins Café and Bar. The church tower is scaffolded, but the rest of the church is still heavily damaged. The area is fenced off with steel plates and the windows are boarded up. The second church has no roof at all. The wooden frame shows where the roof once was. It feels a bit contradictory that the adjacent presidential palace and parliament building are in perfect condition. The Fort Young now houses a luxury hotel. The guard allows us to take a quick look inside. We wander through the center until we reach the Roseau River. In a container bar, we order a local beer.
