Chile - Tour of Patagonia

Tour of Patagonia

12 nov 2008 - 8 dec 2008 (27 days)

Alex shows us how to slide down and explains how to brake with the ice axe. Sergio goes down first, carving a trail in the snow. It looks thrilling. I sit down and let myself slide. It’s better than I expected. Sliding through the snow, I quickly cover many meters. Sometimes snow sprays up from my feet and flies over me. In a word, the descent is: “Amazing!” Braking with the ice axe proves difficult. I decide to just go with it. That means I slide down at quite a speed and sometimes even lift off the snow. I end up outside the sliding track but continue in a new one. I just hope my camera in my backpack survives this wild ride. When I try to steer, it goes wrong. I attempt to slow down with the heel of one foot. The first attempt works, but on the second, I spin completely around and end up sliding backward.

Travel around Xhile - Bolivia - Peru

At the bus station, the luggage is loaded into a minibus. We then walk ourselves for about ten minutes to the hotel in the center. San Pedro de Atacama is already a very nice and lively village early in the morning. It feels as if time has stood still here. The hotel looks very charming. All rooms open onto the inner street, and with our travel group, we practically occupy the entire place. Luckily, the sun already warms the inner street a bit. The rooms themselves have no heating, and it’s clear it was quite cold last night. It’s nice that the rooms are already available. We can freshen up in our rooms immediately (literally and figuratively). In the center of San Pedro de Atacama, we visit the main shopping street, the church, and the museum of antiquities. The church is being painted today by soldiers, who are using all sorts of things to apply lime to the walls. The ground next to the church—and the soldiers themselves—are mostly white.
