I’m going on a long hike to the waterfall. Gerhardt mentioned it takes at least five hours, though many hikers take up to seven. The waterfall is a great spot to have lunch. In the end, it turns out there are only two of us; the others either opt for a shorter walk nearby or stay at the lodge. The sun is out, but the forecast for the afternoon is less promising. I’ll have to keep a close eye on the weather. Today, Ra is joining us again as a guide, though I don’t immediately recognize him because of his cap. He promises to watch the weather carefully for me. He expects I’ll be back long before then anyway, as he says it’s about a four-hour round trip. I walk straight through the village of Malealea and descend into the gorge on the other side of the museum. The creeks have carved deep channels into the landscape. After an hour and a half of walking, I round a bend by a tall rock and see the waterfall—about twenty meters high—right in front of me.
