The last stop is on the east coast. The waves of the Atlantic roll against the rocks here. This is also where Devil’s Bridge is located. Several slaves jumped from this natural rock bridge into the sea to commit suicide, thus escaping colonial oppression. The sea only pounds the water under the stone archway. I start talking with a family. The grandfather proudly points to his children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, the family is gathered because they buried his mother yesterday. I offer my condolences. Still, he wants a photo with me in it.

A Caribbean Cruise

In about fifty minutes, we drive to the south side of the island of Antigua. Here lies Nelson Dockyard. In the eighteenth century, English colonists used this natural inner harbor to moor their ships. The harbor was deep enough, and from the sea, the ships were not visible. Our first stop is Down Hill, a fort on top of the hill above Nelson Dockyard. From this fort, ships in the harbor could be defended against possible attacks. Then we drive on to the harbor itself. Nelson Dockyard is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Various buildings from the English colonial period have been restored and now serve as a museum, hotel, or restaurant. The harbor is still in use. Large expensive yachts are moored.
