We walk toward the Spice Market. Where last night there were only empty tables under the historic canopy, there are now numerous stalls set up. Most cater to tourists. In the side streets, sellers also try to tempt passersby with souvenirs. Along the quay, fishermen bring in their freshly caught fish. Pelicans stand ready to snatch up any scraps. From the harbor, we reach Place de la Victoire. It was named Place de la Victoire in 1794 to celebrate the triumph of the craftsmen over the aristocrats. During the French Revolution, white opponents of the abolition of the slave trade were also executed here. Today, the square is laid out with grass and palm trees.
