Just outside the park, along the main road, stands the statue of Genghis Khan. The forty-meter-high statue is visible from afar. What a gigantic monument. You only truly grasp its size when you compare it to the people walking beneath it. The equestrian statue was built in 2008 to mark the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Mongol Empire by Genghis Khan. You can also go inside the statue. In the small museum, a video shows how the steel statue was made. Then I take an elevator that goes up through the horse’s tail. A staircase leads me all the way to the horse's head. From here, I have an impressive view of the vast landscape. On the platform, we meet a Dutch traveler. He’s traveling with two Spaniards on the Trans-Siberian Express. They are making a stop of a few days in Ulaanbaatar.
