After the monastery, we cross the bridge over the Dniester River and enter Tiraspol. At a restaurant, we have a typical Ukrainian lunch. Then it’s time for some Soviet architecture. We view a tank monument commemorating the short war over Transnistria in 1992. Along the main boulevard, colossal Soviet-style buildings dominate the scene. A statue of Lenin stands prominently out front. Another tank monument honors the fallen from WWII, the Afghanistan war, and the Transnistrian war. It’s surreal to walk around here—a piece of Russia in Moldova. Russian flags fly everywhere next to those of Transnistria. Late in the afternoon, we drive back to Chisinau.
