At the final station, Joël offers to walk me to the right bus. We walk through the bus terminal. I wouldn’t have found the way on my own. Bus 180 pulls in just in time. I quickly say goodbye. The driver quotes a fare in Spanish. Joël told me that his last ride into the city cost 38 pesos. I have 40 ready. The driver repeats the amount harshly. I think I hear something with "thirty." I hold out the money I have and add an extra ten just to be safe. He takes 40 and gives back two. This isn’t someone who’s going to help me get off at Plaza de Independencia. Maybe the girl next to me? She doesn’t speak a word of English but understands my question. She shows me a map on her phone indicating where I should get off. Just as I’m about to ask if she’ll give me a signal, she says she’s getting off. A woman behind me has followed everything and taps me on the shoulder. She nods and says something in Spanish—I think she’s promising to give me a signal.
