I join Rémy for a four-hour hike. Rémy shows me some flowers and explains the trees. But of course, I’m here for the indri-indris. When he hears a sound in the trees, Rémy heads into the forest. Two indris turn out to be sitting high up in a tree. A wonderful sight. Other groups start arriving too—Rémy must have tipped them off. When too many people cluster together, my group moves on. A bit further on, we find a group of diademed sifakas in the trees. I try to photograph them through the branches, which is difficult against the bright sky. “Just wait,” says Rémy, “when they finish eating, they’ll come down.” Somewhat skeptical, I follow his advice. About fifteen minutes later, one sifaka climbs down. I can now observe it from just a few meters away. What a beautiful animal. To my left and right, other sifakas begin descending too. 147
