Because the journey goes smoothly today and we are practically passing by the Croatian Plitvice Lakes, we decide to visit them. As we drive onto the parking lot, it's clear we’re not the only ones. We quickly order a sandwich at the entrance and head into the national park. The Plitvice Lakes National Park features a mix of lakes and waterfalls. From above, we can see a series of rapids. A walking path takes us down to the water’s edge. A wooden footbridge allows us to cross to the other side. From this bridge, we have a view of the beautiful clear blue water. What a stunning environment. Via a steep staircase through a cave, we return to the entrance. This was a great addition to today’s itinerary.
We drive back to Karlovac and from there to the Plitvice Lakes. Along the way, we pass several villages. We slow down when we see cars flashing their headlights. A little further ahead, a police officer is checking speeds with a radar gun. We’re allowed to continue. At the entrance to the Plitvice Lakes, it's crowded with tourists. Many are wearing transparent ponchos. The poncho vendor is doing good business today. It’s raining on and off. The park features stunning waterfalls and lakes. Due to recent rainfall, the water level is high, and most paths leading down are closed due to slipperiness. In the afternoon, we continue our journey south along Croatia’s narrow coastal strip. The toll road is excellent — and very quiet. We cover a lot of ground quickly. However, we have to be cautious of strong wind gusts at viaducts. Around 4:30 PM, we approach the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
