Czech Republic - A Road Trip Through Europe

A Road Trip Through Europe

8 juni - 7 juli 2018 (30 days)

The yellow-colored castle contrasts beautifully against the clear blue sky. It already looks stunning from the outside. At the ticket office, we learn that there are no English tours today. However, we can join a Czech-language tour at 11:45 and receive a discount along with an English guidebook. We use the time before the tour to walk through the park. With 200 km², this beautifully landscaped garden is the largest in the country. At exactly 11:45, we report at the entrance. We are the only non-Czech-speaking visitors. Thanks to the English guidebook, we can follow the tour just fine. By reading ahead, we even get the chance to take pictures in advance or wait until others leave a room. The library and the blue ballroom are especially stunning. This castle is definitely a must-see.

In the second festival tent, which can hold about 2,000 people, it’s also very quiet. A “kleines” beer turns out to already be half a liter. Ron and I decide to try one. To liven up the place a bit, we occasionally start the applause ourselves. We also try to sing along with the Dutch lyrics of various folk songs. This quickly draws attention from those present. A Czech couple at our table likes it. They speak broken German and gesture for us to join them—they say we’re their friends. Soon, sausage and beer are ordered. A little later, I find myself struggling with a one-liter beer stein. Cheers, then! At half past ten, I have to go to another tent for the lottery drawing, which means I first have to finish the stein. In the other festival tent, our new friends insist on buying us another beer. There’s no refusing. A liter of beer costs about ƒ3, which is quite expensive by Czech standards. We ask for a small beer, but Ron and I quickly find ourselves with another one-liter stein in front of us.

While walking through the park along the banks of the Vltava River, we hear music. At the edge of the park, we find a fairground. We buy a ticket for the nearly empty grounds. The haunted house has little to offer; most of the spooky effects don’t work. We fail to explain this to the boy at the counter. In the nearly empty beer tent, we order a beer. As we listen to the music, we strike up a conversation with a Czech couple. They treat us to a round of beers. A little while later, the four of us are all sitting with a liter mug of beer in front of us.
