Around five o'clock, we pass the ticket check. In the dark, I walk to the start of the Great Wall of China. No flashlight is needed — it’s a full moon and the new day is awakening on the horizon. Via a stone staircase, I reach the first tower of the Wall. I can make out the outline of the Wall winding through the mountains. We continue to the second tower. This one is higher and offers a beautiful view as the sun rises above the mountains. Thanks to the climb, I’m not cold — perhaps I’m wearing too many clothes. I’ve already stored my gloves. Around 5:45 a.m., the first rays of sunlight appear. The sunlight shines on the Wall. Only now can I see how far the Wall stretches. In the distance, it continues over the mountains.
Around half past one, I arrive at the Beijing Zoo. I immediately ask for the shortest way to the pandas. I walk into the Panda House. I see three pandas sitting in the outdoor enclosure. The pandas are quietly eating near the walls of their habitat, so they are less bothered by the crowd. The Chinese go into raptures at the sight of the giant pandas. They shout, cheer, and of course, take group photos. I love seeing these enormous animals in real life. In the adjacent building, two young pandas are being fed. They come right up to the glass. Cute.
