We drive to Ohrid. In the city center near the harbor, we find a paid parking spot. The small change from the campsite comes in handy. We have no idea how long we’ll stay, so we pay for three hours. If we stay longer, we’ll top it up. It’s immediately clear Ohrid is a tourist destination. Numerous terraces and restaurants line the waterfront. We stroll through the narrow streets and hear a surprising amount of Dutch—it must be a popular destination for Dutch travelers. The St. Sophia Cathedral was built in the 9th century and is one of the most beautiful churches in Macedonia. Inside, two children are practicing a music piece on violin and bass, which adds charm to the church. We continue along the waterfront. The path gradually climbs. On a rocky outcrop stands the church of Sveti Jovan Kaneo. The small church contrasts beautifully with the lake behind. It’s the most photographed spot in Macedonia for a reason. The interior is stunningly decorated, though the church itself is barely ten by ten meters inside.
