We follow the road heading east. In Victorville, there’s a Route 66 museum. Unfortunately, the museum is only open on weekends. From the outside, the building already looks nice. An old truck is parked out front. Old Victorville doesn’t have much going on anymore. Many stores in the historic center are closed. It feels a bit desolate. In the more lively modern shopping center, we order a coffee. A man next to us starts a conversation. When he tries to read from the Bible, we politely decline. He quickly finds someone else to talk to. From Victorville, we continue along a stretch of historic Route 66. Businesses along the route cleverly capitalize on the old "Mother Road" theme. A Route 66 sign on the front of a building is guaranteed to draw the attention of many Route 66 travelers.
After lunch, I walk via Battery Park to Fort Clinton. From here, the ferry to Staten Island departs. The ferry is just about to leave, so I quickly get on board. From the ferry, I have a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline. The ferry also passes the Statue of Liberty, which is the main reason for my boat trip. Although I’m still a few hundred meters away from the iconic statue, I manage to take a good photo with my telephoto lens. Since there’s not much to do on Staten Island itself, I walk straight back to the departure hall upon arrival to catch the same boat back. I just make it in time.
