Lake Bled is one of Slovenia's main tourist attractions. On the small island in the lake stands the Assumption of Mary Church from the 9th century. Together with Bled Castle perched on the rocks and the snowy mountains behind, it creates a picturesque scene. We’re clearly not alone—there's no parking to be found in Bled. We follow the flow of cars around the lake. The view of the church is beautiful from every angle. On the other side, the parking lot is also full. It’s Sunday, and many local Slovenians are enjoying the weather at the lakeside beaches. A girl at a parking lot advises us to try the station, where there should be space. She’s right. We walk back to the lake. Children are playing in the water and boats head to the island. We cross the road and start climbing one of the hills around the lake. At the top, there should be a great viewpoint. Returning hikers show us the way. “Just follow the path straight,” they say, warning that it’s steep. The muggy heat makes the climb tough, but the view from the top is worth it. Below us lie Bled, the island, and the castle.
The capital city Ljubljana is located in the center of the country. We drive into the city and look for parking. Most parking garages have a height limit of two meters — we need 50 centimeters more. Luckily, there's an outdoor lot within walking distance of the old town. The Triple Bridge is one of Ljubljana's most famous spots. From here, we also have a view of the elevated Ljubljanski Grad (fort). We order lunch along the Ljubljanica River. The weather is beautiful. Through the narrow streets, we reach the funicular. This lift takes us to the castle. The fortress has existed since the 12th century, but its current form dates from 1511. We decide to walk back down, enjoying a wonderful view over the Slovenian capital. It’s a small but beautiful and charming city.
