The island isn’t very large. The southern part is mostly occupied by private homes. The northern tip is more touristic. I walk along the Main Street until I reach the Split. During a hurricane in 1961, the island broke in two here. Today, this spot near The Lighthouse café is the prime location for swimming. I jump into the clear water from the dock. The water is delightfully warm. However, there's a strong current, especially in the Split. It's nearly impossible to swim against it. To be safe, I stay in the area behind the dock. On the rocky beach, I let myself dry off with a drink in hand. The sun is strong, and I have to be careful not to get sunburnt. I estimate that about fifty tourists are enjoying the sun and sea here on this part of Caye Caulker. If this is the main tourist spot on the island, I’d guess there are no more than one hundred to one hundred and fifty tourists in total.
