Around half past six, just before sunrise, we arrive at Dune 45. Dune 45 is the only sand dune in the National Park that can be climbed. Several people are already making their way up. Encouraged by Thomas’s “go-go-go,” we also start running toward the dune. This burst of energy fades after just a few dozen meters. Walking in sand is very hard work—every step sinks back. The cold air and the dust from earlier climbers make it even harder. With the first rays of the sun, I slow my pace. I take a break halfway up, telling myself I won’t take another step upward. But after catching my breath, I slowly make my way to the top after all. After all, you’re only in Namibia once.
