Jamaica > To the Gospel church

Dag 10 - Sunday, March 12, 2017

It’s strange. I can sleep in today, but I’m wide awake at four o’clock. I do manage to fall asleep again, but wake up feeling even more tired. Fortunately, I have nothing planned for today. I’m staying on the beach in Negril and can take it easy all day.

Jamaica - Dancing on the beach at night

I go to the little restaurant on the beach for breakfast. Here, they take their time as well. It takes a while for the breakfast to be ready—but what does it matter? After breakfast, I walk into Negril. At the New Testament Church of God, a gospel service is underway. I can already hear the singing as I approach the church. I’m warmly welcomed. Tourists are more than welcome in the church. The choir sings enthusiastically, and the congregation sings and dances along. Even the collection is performed with rhythm. Next to the church, a small supermarket is open on Sunday. I stock up on water. At the bakery next door, I buy a pattie curry cheese. While eating my snack, I watch the local life on the street. Mopeds pass by continuously. Back at my hotel, I head to the beach. I lie down on a beach bed under the trees, looking out over the clear blue sea. Soon I’m absorbed in my book. I’m interrupted by drops of rain—a brief shower passes. Although it doesn’t rain very hard, I retreat to my room. I continue reading on my balcony. At the end of the afternoon, I return to the beach. I order a beer while watching the sun slowly descend. Once the sun has disappeared behind the horizon, I walk along the beach to a restaurant—a lovely place to end the day.
