Indonesia > Touristy Sanur

Dag 27 - Monday, June 1, 2015

It feels a bit like the end of the holiday is approaching. Today I pack my travel bag to head to the final destination. By bus, I reach the seaside town of Sanur in less than two hours. Like the better-known Kuta, Sanur is a beach holiday destination for many tourists. The town has many hotels along the beach, a variety of restaurants, and plenty of market stalls. My hotel is on the Main Street, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. The Swastika Bungalows hotel has several bungalows arranged around three swimming pools. The complex looks neat and well-maintained. The room is very spacious. From the Main Street, I walk to the beach.

Indonesia - At the evening market of Sanur you can try local food

It’s immediately noticeable that this is a tourist area. On the beach, I’m quickly approached and asked if I want sunglasses, boat tours, or maybe a massage on the beach. I sit down at one of the many beach cafes for a delicious cappuccino. One advantage of a “touristy” place is that the quality is good. I walk along the promenade, passing luxury hotels. Sometimes, the hotels’ pools extend all the way to the beach. There’s no shortage of luxury. At one of the hotels, I order a sandwich. Afterwards, I walk back to my hotel via the Main Street. I lie by the pool and read my book. In the evening, I go to the night market. Various stalls offer local food. At the first stall, I order small spring rolls, freshly prepared in a handcart. At the next, I order a beer while enjoying my spring rolls. On the menu here is “Tami Goreng.” I have no idea what it is. An Australian tourist explains that it must be some kind of fried noodles. I decide to order a plate of it along with some foe yong hai. A very good choice. Finally, I order just chicken satay sticks at yet another stall. The satay sticks are prepared on the spot, which gives me peace of mind for my stomach. It’s fun to eat typical local food in such a touristy place. I walk back via the Main Street. At the Casablanca Bar, I hear live music and go inside. A cover band is playing rock music. It sounds good, and the bar is busy. Guests can submit song requests on slips of paper, and the band handles them well. Fun.
