Travelogue Travel around Xhile - Bolivia - Peru

June 2004 (28 days)

Bolivia > Sucre, the official capital

Dag 11 - Friday, June 18, 2004

Today we leave Potosí and head for Bolivia’s official capital: Sucre. In the morning, the bus is waiting outside our hotel again. Once more, we have the bus exclusively for our travel group. At eight o’clock, the bus is loaded, and we depart for a journey of approximately three and a half hours. Along the way, there are regular stops for bathroom breaks or sightseeing. For example, we stop at an old Spanish bridge over the river near Betanzoa. Around 11:30, we arrive as planned at our hotel in Sucre. It is a neat hotel with spacious rooms. After Kristina explains about Sucre, we walk into the city. At the central square, we eat an omelet at a restaurant with a balcony. We wander through the streets of Sucre to the viewpoint near the monastery. On the way back, we visit the textile museum, where the various traditional costumes of different tribes are on display and demonstrations show how the fabrics are woven.

Bolivia - Sunset over Sucre from the Cathedral of La Merced

Back at the central square, we visit the cathedral and its accompanying museum. The church can only be visited in combination with the museum. The number of visitors seems limited. A museum guard walks with us to open all the doors one by one. Finally, we go to the Church of La Merced to watch the sunset over Sucre from the church roof. On the roof, we meet another Dutch couple. After the sunset, we quickly take a look inside the church itself, where the caretaker gives us an extensive explanation while already cleaning the building. After an hour of using the internet, I return to the hotel at seven o’clock, where we have agreed to meet for dinner. Refreshed, we later gather to eat at a Chinese restaurant. It is a very good meal. Afterwards, we have coffee at Café Joy Ride, a café owned by a Dutch proprietor. Here, you can get snacks such as croquettes and bitterballen, which makes the café popular with (Dutch) tourists. Around 10:30, I am back at the hotel.
