Today, an optional excursion to the Wondo Genet Hot Springs is on the program. I’ve decided not to join. Partly because the optional excursions on this trip have already been rather disappointing, and partly because it’s quite a long drive.
The Wondo Genet springs are located beyond Shashemene. After breakfast, I settle on the veranda of the bungalow with my book. Once I finish reading, I plan to move to the swimming pool. However, Lia, the tour leader, comes by. She tells me that other bungalows are available with more comfort and, above all, better beds. Clearly, I wasn’t the only one who found the accommodation underwhelming. The new bungalow is a four-person bungalow. I take a bed downstairs, another travel companion takes one upstairs. There’s a shared living room with a television and a kitchen. All in all, it’s much better than the old room. I quickly pack my things, and my bag is brought to the new house. After that, I finally head to the pool. I swim a few laps, then dry off again on a sunbed under the parasol. There isn’t much else to do at this location. In the late afternoon, I grab my camera and go looking for birds around the lodge. I manage to capture some colorful birds on film. I end the day with a group dinner. The meal is offered by the local agent. Technically, the farewell dinner would have been tomorrow, but in Addis Ababa there will only be limited time before we head to the airport.
