The farewell to Swakopmund has come again. Specially for us, breakfast is already ready at half past seven; normally, you can only get it at eight. Thomas stocks up on some food in town while we visit the Spar. From Swakopmund, we drive toward Walvis Bay.
On the south side of the city, we stop to see the flamingos. A little further, we also stop to watch the pelicans along the boulevard. After that, we head toward Sossusvlei—a long trip, especially since the roads are all gravel. This also creates a lot of dust. Thomas has just cleaned the bus thoroughly, but this quickly proves to be in vain. Within a few kilometers, a new layer of dust has already settled in the bus.
We pause in Solitaire for a short break. This small place, centered around a gas station, is famous for its apple pie. Fortunately, there are exactly nine slices left for us. In the sunshine, we enjoy the pie along with the lunch Thomas has prepared, including some freshly bought rolls. After this stop, we continue to Sesriem. By around half past three, we arrive at Sesriem Park and set up our camp. The campsite has a nice swimming pool, although the water is freezing. A quick dip is very refreshing. Afterwards, I quickly order a beer on the terrace to warm up a bit in the sun. Just before sunset, we drive to the nearby canyon. The setting sun casts beautiful light on the rocks. Back at the campsite, Cheryl is already preparing dinner. Now that the sun has gone down, it’s quite chilly. I put on an extra sweater and sit a bit closer to the campfire. This is probably also why everyone heads to their tents early tonight—perhaps also because we need to get up early tomorrow.
