18 february - 1 march 2006 (12 days)
The last day in Canada has arrived. At eight o’clock, we leave Kamloops and head toward the airport in Vancouver. For the last time, the luggage is loaded, and we set off. After a coffee stop along the way and a few hours later, we drive into Vancouver around lunchtime. From the bridge, we had a beautiful view of the city.
In front of the departure hall, we say goodbye to Graham and Julie and join the long line for check-in. The group had already checked in, so options for special requests were limited. After passing through customs and the carry-on baggage check, we bought some drinks with the last of our Canadian dollars. After a small collection among fellow travelers, we still had about 200 dollars left to exchange back into euros (giving the exchange clerk a fun day with his rates). With a little juggling, everyone received their share of the euros. On the plane, I sit next to a Canadian who is flying to Germany for work. During takeoff, he talks about Vancouver, the islands we can see, and the mountains. Along the way, we celebrated Herm Jan’s birthday. Since I happened to be standing in the aisle, I helped the steward with distributing the food and offering coffee. After three rows—exactly our travel group—he decided that was enough, as the bottle of Baileys was practically empty. Nevertheless, we were able to make a toast for the birthday.
